The history of the Air Force gift shop in Lawton, Oklahoma can be traced back to World War II. After the war, many veterans returned home and were unable to find work. This led to a need for businesses that could provide goods and services to military personnel and their families. The first business in Lawton was a grocery store, which closed after a few years due to lack of customers. A post office opened in Lawton in 1949, and it was from this business that the first Air Force gifts started being sold. In 1955, when the Air Force Base was established in Lawton, there was an initial demand for gift items related to the military. However, it wasn’t until about 1970 that any real development took place with regards to air force gifts. That year saw the opening of the First Army Garrison Store on Military Avenue within walking distance of the Air Force Base. This store became known as “The Gift Shop” because it had everything from clothing to books and toys. It would continue serving as an important source of air force gifts until 2003 when it closed its doors permanently due to financial difficulties. Despite having some difficult times throughout its history, The Gift Shop is still remembered fondly by many residents in Lawton today! The Oklahoma Air National Guard's (OANA) 278th Fighter Wing, also known as the "Red Tornado" Wing, is a unit of the United States Air Force. The wing was activated on 1 July 1946 at Wilbur Wright Field, Ohio as an expansion unit of the 1st Bombardment Group. It was redesignated as an independent wing on 15 October 1951 and activated at Shaw AFB, South Carolina on 25 November 1951. The Red Tornado Wing relocated to Lawton, Oklahoma in 1957 and adopted its current name. The wing flew Republic F-86F Sabres from Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina until their retirement in 1984. On 12 December 1967 the 278th Fighter Wing became reactivated with Boeing 707 aircraft at Robins AFB, Georgia under Tactical Air Command (TAC). On 10 March 1969 these aircraft were reassigned to the 328th Fighter Squadron at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina and returned to OANA control effective 18 March 1969. The 737s served with TAC until they were replaced by McDonnell Douglas F-15C/D Eagles in 1994; however they continue to fly with TAC days each year through 2018 when they are assigned back to OANA under Tactical Flying Forces (TFF) control. In1994 the 298th Operations Support Squadron was activated at Tinker AFB using Boeing E-3 Sentinels providing air traffic controller support for exercise Valiant Guardian off coast of Mexico City In2006 Tulsa ANG's 318t Sqdn used Cessna 182 for short range training exercises simulating air defenses aroundOKC On 9 Dec 2006 Tulsa ANG's 319t Sqdn used Piper PA-E Archer for advanced single engine flying exercises simulating allied fighter operations over OKC
Lawton is a small town in the Oklahoma Panhandle, located about 60 miles east of Tulsa. The population was 7,289 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The Townsite Site for Lawton was laid out on December 12, 1894 by J.B. Gorman and others under the name "Hebron". The first settler, James Waddell, arrived on October 20th, 1894 and named the place after his father's home state of Illinois. In 1907, H.L. Fields donated land to form what is now Lawton Center which includes a elementary school, high school and shopping center today known as The Mall at Lawton Center mall). The town began to gain popularity due to its beautiful rolling countryside setting and its proximity to major city amenities such as Tulsa and McAlester (about 25 miles away). Today Lawton has over 100 businesses with more than $1 billion in sales volume employing over 1152 residents including 888 professionals and technical professionals who work in various industries including science, engineering and health care services; agriculture; manufacturing; service sector jobs in retail; education/training; government/political activities; information technology; health care services management; real estate development/rental housing interests etc.; making it one of the most diverse towns in central Oklahoma! In 1946 when Lawton was selected as site for an Air Force Base providing air traffic control for all Oklahomans(the base would be closed in 1993), many people viewed it as a sign that things were going to get better for the town because it was near major cities (Tulsa- McAlester) so people could easily get around without having to go too far from their homes! It wasn't until recently that some people have started realizing how valuable this AFB actually was(mainly because of two wars fought there during which 6500 American military personnel died)and have started trying to restore or maintain aspects of it including: historic buildings like Commanding General's Quarters now used as museum displays(opened in 2006); Hangar #5 reopened after restoration project lasting 3 years starting in 2009 which housed combat aircraft parts & tools& equipment used by Air Force pilots during World War II & Korean War while also containing replica hangar doors from those wars! Today we enjoy wonderful weather throughout much of the year with average highs ranging from 47 degrees Farenheit (−4 degrees C)to 96 degrees Farenheit (+19 degrees C)! tornado season runs from April through November with an average numberof twisters per day increasesing every month but averages only 1-2% compared to other months! Light snow falls during winter but generally stays localized within 2 hours either east or west of Wichita Falls MA USA !
