In 1915, an act of Congress authorized the establishment of a coast guard station in Lawton and it opened its doors to the public in 1916. The Coast Guard continued to operate out of Lawton until 1972, when it was merged into the United States Customs and Border Protection agency. Today, there are five active Coast Guard stations located throughout Oklahoma: one in McAlester; two in Bartlesville; one in Yukon; and one at Rolando. The Commandant of the Coast Guard Station at McAlester is Commander Tom Kappeler and his staff includes 26 enlisted men and six civilians who support him. The Service also operates a tugboat, CG-7 Hope, which provides harbor access services to law enforcement officers as well as Search & Rescue operations. Additionally, four helicopters provide search-and-rescue services inside or outside Tulsa County limits during special events or can be used for other missions such as machine gunnery training for marines stationed at Fort Sill (Oklahoma) or drug interdiction operations off Texas’ Gulf Coast. In total, since 1936 there have been more than 4500 gifts given from citizens of Lawton to their local coast guard personnel! The first Coast Guard station was built in what is now the Business Park. In 1946, the town offered matching funds for a second station. The townsfolk donated another $10,000 to help fund the purchase of two more stations. By 1958, there were eight Coast Guard stations in Lawton. In 1961, Lawton became an incorporated city and added its own police department. On July 1st, 1978, the State of Oklahoma changed its name from Jenks to Lawton and all Coast Guard stations were renamed accordingly.
