Lawton is a city inMuskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,760 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County and the largest city in Muskogee County by population. The history of Lawton can be traced back to 1872 when pioneer George Dixon founded a trading post near present-day Lawton on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1881, John Tisdale opened a general store and two years later erected the first school building in Lawton. A post office was established in 1883, and an oil well was drilled in 1889. The first courthouse was erected in 1893; it burned down in 1903. A new courthouse was built between 1907 and 1909, and it remains its current structure. In 1912, Clarence White organized the town of Lawton into a municipality under state law; this act created local government within Muskogee County for the first time. In 1930, Lawton became home to one of America's earliest military airfields when Tulsa Air Force Base (now Tulsa World Airport) was constructed there; that same year also marked triumph for local agriculturalist Wernher Hübner as he became founder and first president of Oklahoma City Major Producers' Association (Omaha). Gasoline production commenced here during World War II withthe construction ofthe giant Pembina Generating Station on what is now US Highway 169 north of town; Lubricants were our main export until 1974 whenpetroleum took over as our major exported product. Lawton is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1885 by settlers from Canada and operated as a post office until 1907. The town name is derived from the Indian word "law" meaning place of refuge or safety. The first residents of Lawton were English-speaking settlers who arrived in 1885. They ranched and collected taxes from local citizens until 1907 when the post office closed because of lack of mail service. In that year, Lawton became an incorporated town under the name Pleasant Valley. A new post office was opened in 1908 and remained open until it burned down in 1926. In 1925, Lawton built its first school which remains standing today. In 1935, Attorney General James Murchison offered to build a courthouse for the town but no one responded so he decided to build his own courthouse which still stands today. In 1941, Lawton became home to World War II military base US Army Air Forces Station Aliante which continues to this day as a park with interpretive trails and barracks for soldiers dating back to World War I
