Miami, Oklahoma is a small town in the panhandle of Oklahoma. The population was 706 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shawnee County seat, Shawnee City. Miami was founded in 1889 by John Fenton and his family and named for Miami, Florida. The first post office in Miami opened in 1892. In 1903, Miami became a city and has since grown to over 1,000 residents. The city held its first mayoral election on November 3, 1912, with Mayor A.W. Mason winning against incumbent Harry Laughlin by two votes out of three cast. In 1916, Mayor Jens Petersen resigned after being indicted on charges of bribery and perjury; he was acquitted but served three months in prison before returning to office as mayoralty-holder on January 2nd 1917 In 1922 Miami annexed the neighboring town of Norman which had been established as a community near Tulsa by settlers who had come north during the Harding years following World War I . This annexation created an unincorporated area that included much of eastern Shawnee County and portions of Ottawa County . The area now known as Norman has a rich history that includes several Native American settlements as well as early Spanish exploration (the earliest recorded reference to Miami is from 1569). The Payne brothers developed what would become known as "The Dunes" development along State Road 168 about one mile east of downtownMiami in 1922 when they bought land from Waco Tract Co., owner/operator of Kirtland Air Force Base at then Offutt Air Force Base
