The USS Missouri (BB-63) was the first ship of the United States Navy to be deployed in World War II. Her deployment took place during the Battle of Okinawa and she played an important role in that campaign. After the war, she served as a patrol boat until she was decommissioned in 1949. She then became part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet and was mothballed at Yokosuka, Japan, from 1951 to 1957. She then underwent a technical conversion to an amphibious assault ship before being recommissioned as USS Missouri (AGS-5) on October 25, 1957. She served as flagship of Commander Western Pacific Ocean Development Forces from 1958 to 1960 and again from 1962 to 1966. From 1968 until her decommissioning in 1969, she operated out of Guam as Task Group 69.3 Southwestern Area Squadron One hundred thirty-eighth Naval District. In 1970, she moved back to Yokosuka where she remained until 1984 when she was sold for scrap status and scrapped. The USS Missouri (BB-63) is one of only two ships afloat that were present at Okinawa during World War II; the other is The battleship Arizona (BB-39).
