The history of the Norman, Oklahoma Army National Guard began in the early 1920s when the state of Oklahoma passed a resolution urging Congress to establish an army. The military was seen as a necessary evil in a time when there were no legions available to help defend the state. In 1923, General James Wilkinson became commandant of the Norman Military Academy and soon after, began plans for what would eventually become the Norman, Oklahoma Army National Guard. In 1935, General Duncan McNeill established brigade headquarters at Norman and within two years had organized two infantry brigades and one artillery regiment. On October 1st, 1938, the first battalion of Infantry Regiment #1 arrived in town from Fort Worth Texas just in time for Christmas. That same year saw the establishment of Brigade Headquarters and Troop Center (later Troop A), which housed all subordinate commands needed to support an army-sized unit. In 1941 Lieutenant Colonel Archibald J. Smith assumed command of Brigade Headquarters with Major General Harry Kapp as his assistant colonel. In 1942 Lieutenant Colonel Julius Custer relieved Smith as brigade commander and Major General Harry Kapp became acting colonel while squadron commanders were appointed by Majors General George Crocker and Willis Latham based on their individual troop strengths at that time. By 1944 there were 10 companies in brigade HQ plus 3 squadrons (3rd Squadron Rifles/19th Armored Cavalry) operating under I Marine Expeditionary Force units commanded by FirstLieutenant Commander Forrest Sherman Jr., Jr.. LtCol John Witherspoon commanded 1st Battalion/21st Infantry Regiment from 1945-46; 2nd Battalion/27th Infantry Regiment from 1946-48; 3rd Battalion/29th Infantry Regiment from 1948-49; 4th Battalion/36th Infantry Regiment from 1949-51; 5th Battalion/40th Infantry Regiment from 1951-53; 6th Battalion(2nd Provisional)/5TH Airborne Division Combat Team 1952-. The regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment on October 15th, 1916 and then as the 4th Infantry Regiment on November 9th, 1917. On February 14th, 1940 the regiment was again redesignated as the 5th Infantry Regiment and assigned to United States Army Forces in Europe (USAFFE). On May 15th, 1941 the regiment was transferred back to the United StatesArmy and assigned to Tenth Mountain Division (Airborne) at Fort Campbell Kentucky. Inactivated on September 15th, 1945 at Fort Knox Ky.
