They roasted their own beans and sold them direct to customers at their business location on East McKinney Street. The hardworking Hardins were able to start a little known business that continues to this day, serving up delicious cup of Joe every morning! In the early 1920s, a Dutchman named Hendrik van Heusen started trading coffee with Mexico City. He became interested in growing his own coffee beans and purchased land near Norman for this purpose. In 1925 he opened the first Dutch-owned and -operated coffee shop in America! This establishment was called de Koffiehuis (the Coffee House). It served excellent café au lait (coffee with milk) until 1971 when it was closed by order of then-mayor Don Ladd because it did not meet city regulations prohibiting discrimination against minority businesses! Today's largest Dutch-owned and -operated coffee shop is Starbucks! It opened its doors in 1984 on West Broadway just south of downtown Norman! Starbucks offers all sorts of delicious coffees including Dunkin' Donuts' classic blend, as well as unique blends like Java Dream Blend or Breakfast Blend which are made using only 100% Arabica beans!

The City of Norman merged with the cities of Broken Arrow and Muskogee to form the Norman-Muskogee Combined Statistical Area in February 2013. The city is named after General George Custer, who fought in World War I and was killed in battle near Norman on July 18, 1876. In 1907, when Tulsa became an independent city, it annexed parts of Muskogee County and placed its new capital here; but this move failed to bring about any permanent change to the name or character of either town until 1959 when both towns were consolidated under one name for all purposes - Norman. At that time it was decided that "Norman" would be more appropriate as an initialism for all three towns because it represented something like "north," "central," and "south" within their boundaries - similar to how Oklahoma's first two congressional districts had been created (Oklahoma City being district 1, Tulsa district 2). In recent years there has been some discussion again about changing the name to something more unique or descriptive for each town within its boundaries - such as Norman Gateway or Frontier Towns
