Shawnee is a small town in Osage County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is part of the Tulsa-Canton Combined Statistical Area. The name Shawnee was given to the community by Major General George Armstrong Custer during his 1876 campaign against the Kiowa and Comanche Indians. The first Europeans to visit Shawnee were Spanish explorers on July 15, 1697 when they landed on what is now known as Point Lookout (the present-day town of Lawton) in present-day Tulsa County. A year later French Jesuits founded a mission at Kaw Creek (now Barber). In 1800, Fort Gibson was built north of Shawnee to protect settlers from Indian attacks. The first post office in Osage County was established at Kaw Creek on November 5, 1802. At that time ShawnEE had a population of only fifty people and four stores. In 1821 James Hennepin led an expedition into Kansas Territory and after spending two months overland reached the forks of the Missouri River near Topeka where he claimed land for France under the Louisiana Purchase. On July 12, 1822 he founded Independence Hall as a trading post between Topeka and St Louis with about sixty traders from Great Britain and other countries along with three mules carrying supplies including rifles for mounted cavalry reconnaissance patrols deep into Indian Territory—the very first European settlement in what would become Oklahoma territory outside Wichita Falls et al.. Withdrawing Mexican troops from Texas in 1846 reduced French influence in central Kansas; however, Independence Hall continued to be used as a trading post until it burned down on October 10th, 1865 while under guard by US forces who then took it over for their military camp nearby which also included another French Jesuit mission: Mission de la Salle(later renamed Mission Nouvelle Réunion). On January 1st 1860 Native Americans Kidney Chief Red Cloud attacked Federal agent John Sully's fortified town of Muskogee killing several people before being killed himself inside; this event marks the beginning of white encroachment onto Indian Country culminating with raids by Ulysses S Grant's Army8 years later destroying many wigwams and villages during his Overthrow of Mexico Expedition9 It should also be noted that prior to 1860 most citizens living east or south of today's Arkansas state line considered themselves Cherokee due to their connection with Creek Nation through chief Watauga2 miles east (at geographic conclusion)of modern day Pryor OK9 Although numerous treaties were signed between US & Natives throughout this period there remained much open warfare leading ultimately to cession & removal both sides participants oftenMobility has been related moreso than anything elseto cultural assimilationism whereby most natives viewed whites primarilyas enemies rather than friends or coexisting peacefully side by side thereby increasing opportunities for conflict

The village served as an important center for trade and cultural activities until it primarily lost its importance after the American Civil War. In 1881, the United States government designated Shawnee as one of eleven towns in Kiowa County, Oklahoma, and it gradually lost its significance again. However, it continued to be used as a stop on stagecoach routes until around 1920. After that time, the town developed rapidly and most of the buildings were destroyed by fire or vandalism during World War II.
