Shawnee is a small town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is one of the few remaining settlements in Muskogee County before it was annexed by Tulsa in 1907. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Shawnee was James Salyer on October 11, 1868. Other early settlers included John Ritchie and David Hockaday. The community grew rapidly due to the location of oil wells and timber resources that were abundant in the area at the time. By 1922, Shawnee had a school, post office, Methodist church and 12 businesses. In 1927, the town became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and nine council members. The townsite that currently stands in Shawnee was platted on November 3, 1903 by J.C Purdy as part of a larger land grant given to him by President Theodore Roosevelt for his cattle ranches near Jenks and Elk City. Purdy named his new community Waco Creek after Fort Worth affiliate Waco (now Arlington) Texas . The name "Shawnee" originated with Chief Tecumseh's band of warriors who fought against United States forces during the Indian War (1812-1814). On February 14, 1907, Tulsa incorporation occurred following approval by voters of a referendum calling for annexation of Muskogee County into Tulsa based on concerns over lack of education opportunities available within its borders. As part as part of this annexation process, Shawnee residents voted to secede from Tulsa altogether due to differences over zoning laws which they felt did not allow them enough control over their own destiny within their new home city limits
