The Stillwater National Guard was activated on November 9, 1907. The unit was organized as the 3rd Oklahoma Infantry Regiment and redesignated as the 6th Oklahoma Infantry Regiment on May 1, 1916. The regiment was re-designated as the 7th Oklahoma Infantry Regiment on October 15, 1921. The regiment was redesignated as the 8th Oklahoma Infantry Regiment on September 2, 1942. The regiment was inactivated on June 5, 1945.
Stillwater is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. Stillwater is the county seat of Muskogee County. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for still water that could be seen from a distance and so called because it looked like an iceberg when viewed from a hilltop near its site. The first post office in Stillwater opened on October 1, 1888. A store and hotel were built in 1889 by J.P. Gregg and Wm Fenton. In 1892, Jens Sauer became the first resident postmaster and served until his death on December 10, 1912. In 1907, Dawson Brothers ran a mill which produced flour for local stores and made cheese until 1914 when it closed down due to competition from two other mills in town- one owned by John Hinson and one owned by George Murchison. The US government confiscated these mills during World War I as part of the War Assets Administration program to make war production more efficient than before because they were producing goods essential to American war effort but not munitions or food items which would have been targets for destruction had they been produced domestically although some machinery did end up being put into use after the war as well such as an airplane hangar that was used by Army Air Forces bombers during World War II (this hangar can still be seen today). In 1919, Stillwater had six stores making it Frontier's second largest town after Edmond OK & just ahead of Yukon FallsOK also 2nd largest Okla City! 3rd largest UofS market town behind Tulsa & McAlesterOklahoma City! After WWI ended all business stopped except for 6 school children who took care of groceries while their parents went back to work! This allowed then newly formed city Limits Incorporated with 22 residents 5 merchants (& 50¢ per capita) which founded old bank building (now First National Bank) on Main Street NW cornerclockwise from SW corner School Road in 1920! In 1923 stillwater lost its charter due to lack of growth; however new charter granted same privileges plus right to vote “at any time” within limits set forth therein; this led to even more growth!! When tornado smashed through town June 30th 1926 killing 16 people including mayor Geo Woldingham Jr., many felt sure that downtown would never be rebuilt again but saw promise in German Reformed Church located just east of town on main street (later moved next door about 1960) which had survived tornado damage intact& began slowly rebuilding process!! This led to 4 more businesses opening doors including Sam's Club (still open today), Shell gas station across road from church & fryer place now known as McGee's restaurant serving Papa John's Pizza!), finally Denny’s Submarine Den about ½ mile north west off main street followed later by pizza place operated by current owner Rick Godfrey since 1984!!! All these businesses started small with mom cooking out when we first opened our doors only later becoming full service restaurants etc... thru hard times......until finally this past year when we hit rock bottom financially &Rick came up with idea to reopen old bank building as museum/library/cafeteria combo!!!!!This has brought much rejoicing throughout community especially since most everyone knows about it now thanks largely to Rick!!! After 9 years+ construction $14M has been invested creating world’s tallest indoor arboretum/forestry center overlooking Stillwater River valley floor—largest employer(including 100% veteran workforce)—programmable gardens capable of hosting events up TO 60K visitors per event day!!!! NOW OPEN…. anticipates major attraction season starting late spring 2020
