Albany, Oregon is a small town in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Albany is located on the Snake River and on the edge of what was once a large forested area that was cut down in the late 1800s to make way for agricultural land. The first people to live in Albany were Native Americans who arrived around 1810. The first permanent European settlers came about 1870 when John Wesley Powell and his Party explored the Snake River Valley from its source near Tumwater to its mouth onthe Columbia River. The town's growth continued unabated until World War II when residents chose not to participate in military service because of rationing programs set up by Nazi Germany; however, many businesses reopened after the war ended.
