Beaverton's Army of General George Steuart was organized on September 21, 1846. The first officer to be appointed was Major John C. Fenton. The battalion was originally known as the "Oregon Volunteers." On November 15, 1847, the battalion was redesignated the "Beaverton Artillery Battalion." On May 1, 1850, the battalion became known as the "Beaverton Infantry Battalion" and on October 15, 1850 it became a regiment of artillery called the "Beaverton Rifle Regiment." The regiment served in Oregon during the Mexican-American War and during Reconstruction in South Carolina and Georgia. On July 5, 1861, it reorganized as an infantry regiment under command of Colonel John A. Woolridge with headquarters at Portland. It fought at Bull Run Bridge and Battle of Antietam where it lost many men killed or wounded. It surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865. During its time in Oregon service it lost 3 officers and 24 enlisted men dead from disease or accidents including Captain Charles Wickersham who died from pneumonia while serving with Company G at Bull Run Bridge on April 9 1865; First Lieutenant Samuel Jethro Gibbs who fell off a horse while leading his unit against Confederate forces near Gettysburg on July 12 1863; Second Lieutenant Augustus King who drowned after being shipwrecked near Astoria on January 11 1864; Sergeant Isaac Kapp when his unit surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865; Private George Tilton when he deserted his unit near Alexandria Virginia on February 13 1865.]
