Canby is a small town in the Wallowa and Malheur County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It lies on the north bank of the Pendleton River and west of Happy Valley. The townsite was named after Hiram Canby, an early settler who arrived in 1853. Canby post office was established in 1858, and the first store opened in 1861. The community acquired its current name when it incorporation took place in 1903. As one of several small communities developed around nearby Burns Lake during the late 19th century, Canby quickly prospered as a agricultural hub with a large semisweep irrigation system that delivered water to surrounding farms for agriculture and domestic use. By 1915, though still struggling economically due to low demand from local farmers for produce, Canby had annexed neighboring Hubbell Township. In 1944 – just two years after World War II ended – Canby became one of 54 townships within Oregon's newly created Tillamook County after the state legislature passed legislation establishing Tillamook County as part of efforts to increase rural development and reduce farmworker exploitation by larger counties. During the 1960s and 1970s heavy goldmining operations led to increased population growth in eastern Oregon; however, canadyan businesses were slow to catch up and failed to keep up with advances made by other eastern Oregon communities such as Bend or Redmond

Canby, Oregon is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Canby is located on the east bank of the Willamette River. The first European to see and map what is now Multnomah County was Captain George Vancouver in 1792 while exploring the Columbia River region. He named this area "Canby" after his home port of Portland, England. The village site was platted in 1847 by James Canby and three others as part of a wagon road from the mouth of the Columbia River to the Apple Tree Rapids area near present-day Salem. A post office called Canby was established in 1848, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1861, local farmer Jotham Davenport donated five acres (20 ha) of land at what is now Happy Valley for a school district which would later becomeMultnomah County Schools District #2. In 1865, local resident John Bickenbach donated an acre (4 ha) for another school district which would become Multnomah County Schools District #3; these districts merged into one in 1912 whenMultnomah County was created from parts of Oregon and Washington counties. In 1905–06 local rancher Wm E Hautman donated land to be used as a shopping center on the east side of town along with two other parcels that would form what are now Northeast Expressway and Southeast Expressway junction; these lands were developed into Canby Mall today. In 1924, businessman Harry Fenton donated land adjoining Canbys northeast corner for use as a hospital; this hospital closed in 1984 but remains standing as Northwest Memorial Hospital Now owned by Coeur d'Alene Medical Center Incorporated within Coeur d'Alene City limits outside city boundaries south of I-5). On July 3rd 1907 Milton Park opened its doors for business with about seventy people living there including thirteen teachers from Multnomah High School who came downriver on their way to teach at nearby Aloha Institute; that same year new high schools opened: Springdale School (#1), Hillsboro School (#2), Jack London High School (now Daybreak Christian Academy), Pioneer High School (now Jordan Creek Middle/High School), Beaverton High School (now Jordan Creek Intermediate/Secondary School). With Rapid Growth coming soon due to World War II demand for war materials such as aluminum cans and munitions canisters produced here at Canby mills during wartime production quotas set by Defense Plant Board Canbys growth continued apace until 1948 when all industries were closed due to increase competition resultant from Interstate 5 freeway construction across state lines necessitated by increased military activity throughout America resulting in mass Layoffs & Displacement especially among low income residents much like myself although not mentioned herein primarily because my family has been here since before [the community's] establishment]. Without question some impacts had upon our Municipality & me personally however mostly we just went about our everyday lives going about our regular business operations without really caring or worrying too much about it... even today many years later many people still live here & continue to do so despite all sorts of hurricanes trying to take them away” –Jared Sorensen
Canby was founded in 1853 by Jedediah Canby and his wife, Sarah. The town took its name from the Canby River which flows through it. The first post office was established in 1854. The town grew quickly, and by 1870 there were over 100 residents. In 1876, Canby became the first incorporated village in Oregon. The population reached 1,000 by 1880. By 1890, the town had a population of 4,000 and was home to a large number of businesses including a cotton gin, flour mill, sawmill, lumberyard and bank. In 1912, Canby became part of Tillamook County and experienced significant growth during the early 20th century as Tillamook County developed into one of the most agricultural counties in Oregon. During World War I (1914-18), Canby served as an auxiliary base for military operations along the coast of Oregon. After the war ended in 1918, many local businesses went out of business due to economic factors such as increased competition from neighboring towns with more resources or technological advances that made farming more difficult or impossible. However, some small businesses continued to operate until after World War II when Tillamook County lost much of its agriculture land to development trends . The postwar years were difficult for Canby as well; many residents left for better opportunities elsewhere during this time period throughout Oregon. However, some people decided to stay and rebuild their lives; starting with reopening the original cotton gin in 1951 which helped revive local commerce among locals who had been displaced during World War II Today canby is known for its wide variety of products produced on its farms including fruits/veggies/nuts/chips etc., seafood (codfish), wheat beer (Cascade) and wine
