Canby, Oregon is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of thePortland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR–WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The settlement of Canby was founded by John Canby in 1887 as a log cabin on the banks of the Willamette River. Canby became a post office in 1886 and a little town in 1898 when it incorporated as a village. The name can be traced back to 1868 when Capt. George Capps bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land near present-day Canby from David Boren for $10 per acre ($2 million today). The first post office was established at Canby in 1886 but only served area east of Interstate 5 and south of U.S. Route 26; it closed in 1893 because there were no mail carriers available to serve such an extended area. In 1898, also during this time period, the first school opened in what is now the center of town; it later became known as “The Old School” and still stands today. Canby developed primarily as a farming community with cattle ranching being its primary industry until after World War II when manufacturing began to take hold nearby at Portland and other towns within Multnomah County including Beaverton and Hillsboro
