Central Point is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located about 25 miles (40 km) south of Portland and 10 miles (16 km) east of the city of Salem. The population was 2,600 as of the 2010 census. Central Point is part of the Willamette Valley region, which includes most of western Oregon and parts of eastern Washington. The first Europeans to visit what is now Central Point were among fur traders who journeyed through present-day Oregon in 1807–08 on their way to trade with natives in what is now California. In 1824, United States surveyor John Capps purchased land at what became Central Point from the local tribe for $200 ($ in 2019). In 1847, when central point was platted as a town site by William Halsey and James Kapp, it had an estimated population numbering only 100 people. By 1860, however, Central Point had reached 1,000 residents; by 1870 it had increased to 2,600 citizens. That same year saw the opening of the Oregon Trail which linked Oregon with California via wagon road. As traffic increased on this route, so too did demand for goods brought overland from markets in California and Mexico City American Indians began raiding settlements along the trail—a practice that continued until after World War II when Trails prohibition made such raids more difficult. As early as 1861⁄2 CentralPoint’s post office operated out of a log cabin owned by Hiram Sibley near current day Highway 26A off US 101W just east of SR 99E between Butte County and Wallowa County mission stations established along both sides of Needles River drainages within Indian country westward toward Mount Hood National Forest; these stations served travelers journeying from Salem or Portland or any other part within 4 miles (6 km) thereof or all pointssouthwestward towards Beaverdam Creek drainage northward into Wallowa County interiorettlement areas including Butteville #8 & 9 village sites & ranchlands lying east & west side drainages draining into Snake River Plain drained by Yakima River Ohlone Tribekokomatoma Creek

In 1907, a new school building was built to accommodate students from both Salem Township and Central Point residents who had become interested in learning about local history and culture through classes offered by the American School Union (ASU). This school building still serves as Central Point's primary educational institution today and is known locally as "The Old Home". Since its inception as a town, Centralpoint has seen many important changes including: From its beginnings as a small farming community to becoming one of Oregon's most vibrant commercial centers during prohibition; from being a rural outpost near Mount Hood to experiencing rapid growth during World War II; from being abandoned following the war to becoming one of America's most thriving post-war communities; from its current location within Clackamas County to experiencing continued growth throughout this century –CentralPoint has always been an active participant in our regional fabric and played an essential role in shaping our region’s identity today.
