The history of the Coos Bay Army Depot began in 1892 when a small town on the Oregon Coast decided to arm itself. The town was naturally chosen because of it's strategic location—just south of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and east of Depot Point on the coast. At first, arms dealers bought weapons from local farmers and hunters, but as World War I approached, they realized that an army would be needed to protect their new town. So in 1914, they organized themselves into a regiment and purchased their first rifles from Germany. In 1918, with World War I over, the depot was activated and began producing ammunition for the war effort. soon after, it acquired its own guns and machineguns. It produced shells for both sides in World War II before becoming a military base in 1945. In 1949, it became part of the United States Army Reserve night headquarters corps located at Fort Bragg North Carolina before being decommissioned in 1976. Today it is used as a museum dedicated to Coos Bay's military heritage.

Coos Bay is a coastal town in Oregon, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Coos Bay were the Spanish who named it "Bajo de las Palmas" in 1605. In 1824, prospectors discovered gold and silver mines in what is now Coos Bay and started to come up with plans for a city there. They did not have success until they constructed Fort Clatsop on an bluff overlooking the bay in 1851. The harbor became an important commercial port and served as a terminus for steamboats transporting goods from California to Oregon and points north during the 19th century. After a fire destroyed much of Fort Clatsop in 1886, development of Coos Bay picked up again; by 1900, there were more than 100 businesses here. During World War II, Coos Bay was one of several ports where Japanese forces landed during the Pacific Theater of Operations; most notably at Guadalcanal on 7 November 1942. The town was bombed on 15 December 1943 and 25 December 1944; both times large parts of it were destroyed or heavily damaged. In 1946, when Oregon became a state, Coos Bay joined Multnomah County as part of its territorial jurisdiction

Fremont and the first legislature was elected in 1850. In 1861, as part of the Civil War, Oregon seceded from the Union and joined Confederate California. The Ulysses S. Grant administration considered it an unauthorized state and tried to remove its residents but were unsuccessful. After 1865, when most of California had become a Mexican state, many Oregans decided to move there because they felt comfortable in what they saw as an independent country with a different culture than their own home country.
