Cornelius, Oregon is a small town located in Multnomah County, Oregon. The population of the town was 1,951 as of the 2010 census. Cornelius is named after Cornelius Whitman who fought for Oregon in the Mexican-American War and was one of the first white men to set foot on what is now America. The original settlement at Cornelius was established in 1847 by Joshua Chamberlain and others. A post office called Cornelius was established in 1850, and remained in operation until 1959. The community grew quickly due to its location close to the Great Western Railroad and its access to water resources. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living here. In 1865, a school was built with money donated by local farmers. The first businesses opened in Cornelius were grocers and seed dealers. However, it wasn't until 1870 that lumber began arriving from outside Multnomah County for use in buildingroads and bridges in northeast Oregon. This led to an increase in business activity for both propertyowners and entrepreneurs alike; by 1875, there were more than two dozen businesses operating here! during World War II many people came from out of state to work on military projects around Portland or Bend because those areas had no other industry that could support large numbers of workers during wartime shortages (eastern Oregon also experienced high levels of unemployment because mining had stopped). Many residents decided not to return home during wartime since food prices increased dramatically while war production decreased; however most returned once hostilities ended

By 1925, however, it had shrunk to just 10 people and its population was down to 5 in 1940. The last resident of Cornelius died in 1975.
