The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Corvallis, Oregon in 1945. The gift was the B-29 Superfortress bomber, which served as the nucleus of the USAF's first air wing. The plane arrived at Portland International Airport on December 12th and was unloaded onto a military runway. A welcoming ceremony took place, with dignitaries including the Mayor of Portland, General Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, and Colonel James Doolittle. The airplane had been stored at Boeing Field in Seattle since 1936 and it was finally delivered to Portland on December 15th 1946. On that day, President Harry Truman gave a speech in which he complained about some of America's military expenditures and said that the US should be "leading by example" when it came to gifting aircraft to other countries. After christening the bomber "Eleanor", she underwent maintenance operations at Boeing Field before being transported back to Portland for use by the USAF. In 1947, Captain John Fenton became Chief Pilot of the unit stationed at RAF Northolt in England. He brought Eleanor back stateside for an exhibition tour that year and she also made appearances at various USAF bases around the country before returning to England in 1948. In 1951-1952, Captain Fenton served as Commanding Officer (CO) of IX Bomber Command's 860th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy). During this time period, he also flew USS Enterprise (CVN 65), America's longest combatant ship afloat during World War II - 14 days longer than any other navy ship! However his most memorable achievement as CO would come three years later when he led XX Bomber Command's 460th Bombardment Squadron into action against Japanese targets near Nagasaki! This squadron performed their bombing missions from behind enemy lines under cover of night whilestd engaged in amphibious landings operation! It was during this campaign that Captain Fenton became well known within the USAF for his ability to fly short hops between two locations without refueling! After retiring from active duty in 1960 after 26 years of service followed by several years spent flying surplus planes from AFM surplus stock pool (AFM being acronym for Air Force Museum Management Agency), Captured Fenton moved back home and resumed his hobby of restoring vintage planes - starting off with a DC-3C which he restored over 10 years ago! He continued restoring until his death on October 4th 2016 aged 89 years old - having outlasted many veterans like himself who have passed away since then...
