He named it after his home country, Germany, because he believed that good German beer would bring people together. In 1871, Dutchman Joris van der Rohe started trading coffee beans from his farm near Medford and soon discovered that local farmers were not able to produce enough coffee to meet demand. He began importing beans from Spain and other parts of Europe and roasting them himself in his brick-fired ovens. The firstDallas Coffee Company was incorporated in 1892 by owner Wm Hargrave with help from fellow businessmen George Atherton and John Hargrave Sr.. In 1928, Dallas Coffee became one of the first Starbucks stores when founder Howard Schultz opened up a small kiosk at 1202 Elm Street in downtown Dallas.
