Grants Pass, Oregon is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located about 20 miles south of Thesalon Lakes National Recreation Area and 100 miles east of Portland. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,407. The first people to live in Grants Pass were the Hahamans who lived on the eastern side of the Cascades and traded with other tribes in what is now Washington State. In 1847, John McLoughlin founded Thesalon Lakes on the banks of the Willamette River near present-day Grant Pass. McLoughlin named his settlement after one of his fellow entrepreneurs at The Seattle Pacific Railroad company - James A. Grant - who had helped build that line across ancient Puget Sound. Grant Pass became an important commercial center due to its location close to both Thesalon Lakes and Portland and its easy access to transportation including stagecoaches from Whitman Station on Hood River River to Thesalon Lakes and then by wagon downriver to Portland. By 1881, when Oregon became a state, Grant Pass had become an established dry goods depot serving as a seasonal stop for travelers passing through central Oregon along I-5 betweenPortland and Salem On July 6, 1889, Theodore Roosevelt visited Grants Pass while campaigning for election as president; he stopped at the town square where he distributed fliers calling for citizens to vote against annexation into Mexico which would have increased competition from Central America among American countries seeking passage through America's southern border Still today there are descendants of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders who fought in Mexican–American War (1846-48) living in nearby Bend In 1923–24 Danforth Waddell discovered gold at Butte Creek which led to widespread mineral exploration throughout central Oregon When World War II began efforts were made by local authorities to restrict civilian mining because it could lead directly into enemy hands but this failed due largely to lack of knowledge about how gold was produced within those specific areas Mining continued until 1963 when all federal surface claims were closed off following Operation Silver Spike during which over 23 million cubic feet (910 m3)of ore was removed
