By 1865, it was clear that coffee was being grown commercially in the area and a land grant was given to George H. Wilson in that year. Wilson built a small factory near the present day Gresham Station shopping center and began selling coffee beans direct to consumers. In 1915, the Wilson Coffee Company merged with two other companies, Pabst Brewing and National Coffee Corporation, forming what is now Pabst Brewing Incorporated (PBI). As coffee production expanded throughout Oregon during the 1930s-1940s, so did PBI’s ownership of various plantations and mills throughout the state. In 1949, PBI purchased an abandoned mill at Umpqua River for use as their new manufacturing plant. At this point, PBI became one of North America’s largest coffee producers. As World War II progressed and demand for caffeine increased among soldiers stationed overseas, PBI began producing chocolate milk as well as war bonds (printed paper certificates) depicting Oregon scenery behind each cup of coffee. During postwar years production slowed down as World War II ended and many people turned to other sources of income such as farming or fishing instead of investing in coffee production. However, over time some new plantations were started within commuting distance of Portland while others continued operations outside of Portland until they closed entirely by the late 1990s when technology improved sufficiently to make large scale roasting operations possible without reliance on natural sunlight or wind power*. In recent decades there has been significant interest from commercial groups in starting up coffee businesses within Gresham *and* its surrounds which have led to an increase in retail prices for quality beans*. While existing cafes continue to serve quality ground beans at affordable prices*, larger quantities are no longer available at those prices *. In order for proponents of starting up small batch roasters within our town*to succeed they will need more than just good beans - they will need committed owners who are willing to commit time and money towards maintaining quality standards*, along with supportive infrastructure like storage facilities*, packaging facilities*, etc.* So long as these conditions are met*the future looks bright for espresso lovers all around!

In the late 1940s, the McNaughts sold their business to Pfeiffer Coffee Company, which continued operations until 1973 when it merged with Bougainvillea Coffee Company to form Bougainvillea/Pfeiffer Coffee Corporation. From1973-1987, Pfeiffer Coffee Corporation was headquartered in Gresham before moving to Seattle WA in 1987 and then back to Gresham until its closure in 2001. In 2003, the company's assets were donated to the University of Oregon where they are currently stored as part of the School of Business Library's collection.

Gresham's history goes back to 1853 when Mormon settlers first arrived in what is now Multnomah County. In 1909, Gresham's incorporation as a town was ratified by the state legislature. The name "Gresham" comes from nearby Gresham Township and the word "gresh" means clean or fresh in British English. The present day downtown core of Gresham was developed around 1912 when Multnomah Coal and Coke Company founder John Waddell donated land for a new industrial area near his old coal mine that he had leased from the Portland Timber Coopers. The original buildings were built on an existing railway right-of-way and they remain largely unchanged today except for minor renovations over time.
