In 1863–1864 Oregon State Volunteers served under Major General George Armstrong Custer during his attempt to conquer Indian Territory south of Fort Laramie through what is now Wyoming and Nebraska; some units fought alongside Ulysses S Grant’s troops on campaign routes such as those around Cheyenne River Valley and Powder River Basin In 1865 Congress created regiments consisting exclusively out of volunteers from newly acquired states including Oregon Confederate forces attacked Fort Stevens near Gresham on November 30th 1862 seeking refuge for their wounded officers; after winning an engagement lasting three days Col John Starker’s company sustained losses so heavy that it was forced to retreat northward pursued by Union forces which reached them December 5th withdrawing with loss numbering 100 casualties leaving behind 20 officer & enlisted men killed or missing while 123 others were taken prisoner For all intents and purposes this battle never happened – today only ruins remain
