Hillsboro, Oregon is a small town in the backcountry of Oregon. The population was 7,000 at the time of the 2010 census. It lies on U.S. 97 between Mount Hood and The Gorge National Recreation Area, just east of the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Hillsboro is located in Clackamas County, about halfway between Portland and Salem. The community was founded by farmers in 1871 after they arrived from Illinois to homestead in what is now Eastern Oregon's Deschutes County. Hillsboro, Oregon is a city in eastern Oregon and the county seat of Clackamas County. The population was 20,563 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Willamette River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Portland. Hillsboro was founded by emigrants from Kentucky in 1853 as a farm town called Newberg. In 1863, it became the site of a Union army retreat after being defeated at Battle of Montero Hill by Confederate forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. The city was named for George Washington Hills, an early settler who had traded goods with Native Americans in what is now Hillsboro County. The first post office in Hillsboro was established in 1855, and it served until 1885. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln visited Hillsboro and approved its name change to Newberg to reflect its then-new status as a Union town after being defeated at Montero Hill by Confederate forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. residents voted to rename their city after him in 1915 when he became president again and they were able to receive his endorsement for their choice of name during his two terms in office.
