Hillsboro is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 30,763 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat ofMultnomah County and has a population of 39,711 as of 2019. Hillsboro is located on the south side of Portland and is bordered by the Willamette River to the east and north, Glisan Heights to the west, Beaverton to the south, and Tom McCallum Park to the northwest. During World War II several hundred citizens served in various military units including members of USS Arizona (SS-121) which sank off shore off Oregon coast; USS West Virginia (CA-8) which transported troops out to occupied Japan; USS Pigeon Forge (AGS-14) which salvaged oil tankers sunk offshore near Astoria during WWII; SS-2246/USNS Humanitarian Relief Ship Madeleine which brought food supplies to refugees stranded ashore on Java Island during WWII; USNS Tacoma (AKA Lillie Mae)- USNHC ship operated by Coast Guard Auxiliary Service providing medical care for civilians stranded ashore at Truk Island during WWII; HMCS Ahousathee assisting Naval Reserve unit HMS Cornwallis while they prepared for Operation Neptune’s Spear –the largest Maritime Strike against Japanese forces ever mounted The post-World War II growth period saw significant development across all fronts within downtown areas such as new housing developments such as Northgate Mall Shopping Center adjacent to OSU's old campus buildings just east of 3rd Avenue NW etching out an entire block bounded by First Avenue NE & 4th Avenue NE & 5th Avenue NE & 6th avenue NE - one block beyond where today's Pioneer Square sits ; continued commercial expansion with apartment complexes such as South Waterfront apartments complex just northeast of 3rd Ave NW connected directly with PSU canteen immediately next door ; major projects underway or soon planned including replacement of aging river bridges over Willamette River including both John Day Bridge over Sandy Boulevard SW & Hawthorne Boulevard SW & Eliot Bridge over Columbia River extendingrx from First Ave NE all the way down 2nd Ave SE before terminating at Southeast Division Road ; large parklands expansions such as Centennial Park located southeast corner 3rd AveNW between Morrison Road & Broadway Channelside Drive extendingzx to Northwest Division Road just east thereof ; continuing residential growth with annexation recently granted approval for nearly 8 miles along Northeast Division Rd from Willamette River waterfront past Hood Canal Marina into eastern annexe resulting in nearly 400 residences being built within walking distance either southward onto 3rd AveNW or westward onto Centennial Parkway Oregon State University opened its doors again full force in fall 2007 having been closed since 1999 due largely to budget constraints following World War II when soil conditions deteriorated so badly that construction could not continue without risking further damage .
