The Oregon Army National Guard was organized on February 14th, 1862. The first regiment to be organized was the 2nd Regiment of Infantry. The first volunteers were mustered in on November 3rd, 1861. On December 12th, 1861, the 1st Regiment of Infantry was activated and began service in Oregon Territory. On January 6th, 1862, the 1st Regiment of Infantry reported for duty at Keizer Barracks. On July 4th, 1862, the 2nd Regiment of Infantry arrived at Keizer Barracks from Oregon Territory and became part of the 1st Battalion of Cavalry Corps under command of Colonel John Sweeny.
Oregon was founded by the United States in 1851 as a part of the Oregon Territory. The name comes from Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de la Hoz, who named it after his friend and mentor, Francisco de la Rúa. The first residents of what is now Oregon were fur traders and their Native American guides. By 1855, about 5,000 people lived in the region. In 1857, General George Armstrong Custer and his army invaded California and discovered Oregon on July 9th – this event led to the Mexican-American War which ended with US victory. In 1863, the Umpqua River was crossed by wagon train led by George A. Smith and he named the river for General Custer. In 1868, gold was discovered at Siuslaw Pass in Keizer County. This led to an influx of miners and settlers into Oregon; by 1870 there were more than 20 settlements in Keizer County alone. After years of hard work, including many Baptisms for Men (Baptismal water available only during Advent), farmers began to reap the benefits of new technology developed during this time: irrigation systems allowed crops to be grown year-round while also providing pasturelands for livestock; electric lights helped businesses grow larger; telephones became common;and cars arrived beginning in earnest on both local roads and mail routes just before World War I halted those railroads’ growth completely). As technological advancements continued along with increasing trade connections between America and Asia through railway lines such as those built through Keizer Valley – things started to change once again when World War I started in 1914 with Austria-Hungary invading Serbia – leaving much of Europe without any help from either side as war engulfed Hungary more broadly then Yugoslavia (the Serbian province within Hungary proper).
