The first Coast Guard gift history in Keizer, Oregon took place in 1919. TheKeizer Coast Guard Station was founded that year by Capt. John H. Schofield and Lt. Willis Sells with the intent of providing a harbor defense for the community. In 1949, Captain Harry J. Flanders became the first Commandant of the Keizer Coast Guard Station and he ordered the purchase of an advertising billboard to promote the station throughout town. In 1951, Capt.(Ret) track star Dick Cramer became Commandant of the Keizer Coast Guard Station and he ordered the purchase of a new hangar and dockyard to house the patrol boats and other vessels used on Oregon's coastline. By 1959, all volunteer coast guard stations were being purchased by local government entities as part of a state-wide effort to improve maritime security within Oregon. In 1979, Capt.(Ret) Don Eberhart was named Commandant of the Keizer Coast Guard Station after his election as acting Chief at Portland's Gladstone House during President Jimmy Carter's visit to Oregon for his steel industry bailout program. At that time, it was decided that there would be no more self-sufficient coast guard stations located within city limits; instead, each station would be connected through a system of docks and piers stretching from downtown Portland allthe way out to miles offshore in order to provide continuous coastal security coverage throughout our state's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Since then, considerably more has been done at ourKeizer Coast GuardStation than at any other point along ourstate's coastline - we've developed a sophisticated water response capability capable of responding rapidly to any typeof emergency; built an impenetrable fence around ourstation; erected one Of America's largest telescopes insideourstation - not only does this facility allow us TO watch everything happening on ourstate'scoastline FROM OUR STATION BUT ALSO allows us TO monitoring events unfolding offshore AND WITHIN OUR EEZ! Keizer, Oregon is a town in Morrow County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The name "Keizer" comes from George Keizer and his family who settled in the Rogue Valley in 1847. In 1868, A.F. Ladd opened a store at the junction of what are now US 97 and 395 in what is now downtown Keizer. The first post office was established in 1870 and continued to serve until it closed in 1914. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,089 people, 1,541 households, and 910 families residing in the town. The population density was 509 people per square mile (219/km²). There were 1,681 housing units at an average density of 283 per square mile (115/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%of the population
The Coast Guard has been providing service to the area’s shipping and maritime communities for more than 100 years. Today, the Coast Guard employs approximately 120,000 people across the United States. The Coast Guard gift history can be traced back to when it was first established as a separate military service in 1915. The Service received its start with donations of small boats and other supplies from local fishermen. In 1916, the Service purchased its first vessel, the SS John F Kennedy. In 1951, the Service created its own aviation unit and began ferrying sailors and passengers between ports on Long Island and New York City. In 1972, Congress passed a bill that designated Christmas as National Naval holiday. This event helped stimulate economic growth in coastal communities by promoting tourism. As a result of this legislation, gifts from individuals or businesses were no longer necessary for members of the Coast Guard to celebrate National Naval holidays. From then until 1993, gifts were not accepted during National Police Week (a period surrounding Thanksgiving). Since 1994, however, gifts have been accepted during both National Police Week and Christmas week. Gifts may also be sent to the Coast Guard through online channels such as Facebook or Twitter (@coastguard). Each year around December 1st-5th, members of the public are invited to send in pictures of any unique items they have made or collected over time that could be donated to the Service. These submissions become part of an annual treasure hunt known as “Gift Crawl” which is open to anyone who wants to participate! However, stability and prosperity did not last long in Keizer; during World War I (1914-18), it was bombed by German forces four times. After the war ended, steel production boomed in Oregon but little effort was made to rebuildKeiser after the war destroyed many homes and businesses." In 1955-1956, Keizer saw its first round of redevelopment when developers set out to create an urban park system within downtown boundaries with funding from Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber . Unfortunately for Keiser residents who were brought into contact with developers’ bulldozers during this time period - some homes were totally destroyed while others experienced significant damage . Today there are few reminders that these days back then life could be quite different for those living outside of downtown boundaries
