Lake Oswego is a town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 17,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The name Oswego comes from a local word meaning "water hole" or "reservoir." The first Europeans to visit Lake Oswego were fur traders in the early 1800s. In 1853, President James K. Polk sent an American party to explore the Columbia River and its tributaries. The party's leader, U.S. Representative David Wilmot, recommended that Congress build a canal through Oregon for irrigation purposes and for military transportation between Puget Sound and California. Congress appropriated $30,000 for the project on November 7, 1853. Construction of the canal began in 1854 but was halted because of financial problems caused by floods in 1862 and 1865 (the latter caused by disastrous winter weather). When work recommenced in 1866–67, workers discovered a natural gas field onshore near present-day Lake Oswego (although no gas was found until 1893). Gas supplies enabled Lake Oswego to become one of the main towns in central Oregon during the 19th century; it also became an important manufacturing center during this time with papermaking being one of its most significant businesses (until recently). During World War II, many companies located their operations around Lake Oswego due to its strategic location as a stopover on Highway 101 between Seattle and Portland; these include Boeing Aircraft Company headquarters from 1939 to 1945 and Kaiser Aluminum from 1944 to 1946 before it merged with Alcoa Corporation; United steelworkers Local #1 formed shop stewardship committees throughout much of1945-1946 at various aluminum plants operated by other companies before amalgamating with United Steelworkers Local #2 later that year; Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Headquarters from 1942 until 1948 when it moved into Building No. 6 on State Street just south of Interstate 5 near Clinton Road; General Motors Aviation Division Headquarters from 1941 until 1945 inside Building No. 3 on Willoughby Drive across I-5 north of downtown Portland
