The first Europeans to visit Lebanon were prospectors working for the U.S. Government in what is now Nevada Territory. On July 8, 1847, two men and one woman named John Caird and his wife Margaret set out from their ranch on the Mullen River in what is now Clackamas County, Oregon and walked 4 miles (6 kilometers) to where they saw an Indian camp amid high mountains near what is now Lebanon. They named this place after their guide's village home country - Beirut in Syria - but no one knows for sure how long they stayed there or when they returned home. In 1849 another group of Americans arrived in response to AIM-5; this time led by Captain Augustus Clarke with twenty men under his command and including three Germans called Wilhelm Ruppelt and Johann Friedrich Weinreb soweit dieser Zeit nicht bekannt wurde und geheißen hatte "Mein Kampf" (=My Struggle), which he had written while prisoner of war at El Cuarto Jail in Mexico City during Mexican Revolution (1846-48).
