Lebanon, Oregon was founded in 1876 by Captain James W. Meier and his wife Anna. The Meers had been living in the area for about a year when they decided to come to the United States and start a new life. They first set up a trading post on the side of Mount Hood, but it soon became apparent that they needed more land to build their dream home. So, in 1879, they bought 3,000 acres of land east of Salem from John Smeaton. They started building their house on the property in 1881 and named it Lebanon after their ancestral home in Palestine. In 1902, they donated 2,500 acres of land to the state of Oregon as part of the Mount Hood National Forest system.
