In 1902, the Medford Army Post was established in Oregon. The post was originally called Fort George Washington and at its peak had a garrison of 300 soldiers. In 1912, the name of the post was changed to Fort Lewis and it continued to serve as an army post until 1951. Since then, the fort has been used as a city park. The first military installation in Medford was Fort George Washington which was located on what is now downtown Medford. The fort served as a training ground for troops before they were sent to fight in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The fort also played an important role during World War I (1914-1918). After the war, General John J. Pershing ordered that all military installations be closed except for Fort Lewis which became a civilian center for munitions production. During World War II (1941-1945), Fort Lewis saw action in both World Wars I and II. It also served as headquarters for Pacific Theater Command during 1943-1945. Medford is a town in The Oregon Country, in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is located on the banks of the Willamette River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Portland and 50 miles (80 km) south of Eugene. As of 2010, Medford had a population of 18,604. The first people to live in what is now Medford were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals near the river's edge. In 1797, John McLoughlin founded McLoughlin County after he discovered rich deposits of coal and gold near present-day Medford. In 1824, when Joseph Wiggin bought land from the Osage Indians for $1 million, he named his new community "Medford" after himself and his wife Minerva (née Whitman). In 1847, John Cushing began construction on the current courthouse which was dedicated in 1850. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the junction of two wagon trails that led to Oregon City and points east. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in Medford with a total population size approaching 1,500 people. In 1871–72, construction began on the first school building which was completed in 1875; it served as the town's only public school until 1902 when it became part of Oregon State University's School of Medicine. During World War II many residents worked at Boeing Aircraft facilities located nearby; many residents also volunteered their time during wartime work programs such as lend-lease or military housing projects throughout southern Oregon Mountain Boys Brigade Headquarters Unit #2 barracks near present-day Northglenn Street and Rock Creek Drive – just east of Interstate 5 – while they waited for orders to move inland into provide support for Allied forces fighting in Europe during 1945–46: these troops were known as "the last hurrahs." In 1951 voters approved an ordinance authorizing annexation by Salem County following Measure 8 which sought to annex all towns within Orleans County except Grants Pass although no plans ever surfaced for developing any portions within Medford itself beyondeties; this event marked the beginning of a long process that ultimately resulted in today’s city limits including much acreage previously annexed by Salem County back onto downtownMedford
