Medford was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and named for George Medford, an early settler. The first post office was established in 1848. At its peak in 1920, Medford had a population of over 50,000 people. In recent years, however, it has lost much of its population and commercial vitality due to suburban development and economic recession. The townsite which now makes up most of Medford was first settled by Mormons during the late 1840s as they journeyed eastward from Utah through what is now southeastern Oregon into what is then California Province (now eastern Nevada). The Mormons were motivated to establish a new home because they felt that God's selection for America would be more diverse than within their native Utah or Wyoming Territory where they had lived before reaching American shores. They also hoped that such a location would provide them with access to trade with other parts of North America and beyond. George Medforth - one of the original settlers - arrived on September 15th 1847 en route from Nauvoo Illinois via Salt Lake City on his horse John Browning (later donated to Brigham Young University). Heading west over the Cascades he sawMount Hood looming ahead: "My heart swelled with admiration as I looked upon this giant peak which so many weeks ago I could only have dreamed about".
