Medford is an agricultural community in the Willamette Valley located in eastern Oregon. The population was 16,746 at the 2000 census. It lies on U.S. Route 99 and the Medford-The Dalles Bridge connects it to Portland, Oregon. Oregon's first post office opened in Medford on October 6, 1851, and its first store was built by John A. Cook. In 1857, a depot was built near the present site of downtown to serve as a distributing point for goods brought into the area from surrounding counties by wagonloads or horse cars carrying men and materials needed for construction or agriculture. By 1860, there were six stores in town; four of them were operated by merchants who bought supplies from local farmers and then transported them to Medford for sale. Medford, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It was founded in 1853 by Captain George Freeman and his wife, Myrtilla Medford. The name "Medford" comes from the word "medicine," which was first brought over to Portland by pioneers. The Medfords were a farming family that operated a large farm on Whatcom Creek. In 1878, they sold their farm and moved to what is now the city of Medford. The city's history can be traced back to 1878 when Captain George Freeman and his wife, Myrtilla, bought land in what is now the city of Medford from the heirs of Jonas Langdon. They started building homes here and soon had a population of about 150 people. The growth of the city was due in part to its location near an important railroad junction and its close proximity to other businesses and residences in Portland. In 1912, Mayor Jens Jensen proposed that the City Council establish an parks department to provide recreational space for citizens within walking distance of each home or business. This development led to the creation of Pioneer Park (now Lombard Street Park) on land adjacent to Freeman's old home. During World War II, Medford played an important role as one ofPortland's primary supply points for military materials needed across America. Many munitions manufacturing plants were located in or around Medford during this time; these factories produced everything from artillery shells to chemical weapons. After the war, many of these sites became inactive or were abandoned because they were no longer commercially viable. However, Pioneer Park remained open until it was demolished in 1978 following passage by City Council Resolution #2128 calling for its renovation into parkland solely for public use (the present-day site).[1] In 1972, mayor Brian Golding announced plans for redevelopment of much older portions of downtown including Pioneer Park which would create additional living spaces and office buildings within walking distance for residents as well as new commercial tenants at various levels below street level (elevations greater than 10 feet).
