Milwaukie, Oregon is a town in the Columbia River Gorge region of Western Washington. It straddles the border of Walla Walla and Wenatchee counties, and has a population of over 25,000. The coffee industry has been around in Milwaukie since at least 1892, when Nicholas-Jacques Conte established a small plantation near what is now downtown Milwaukie. By 1925, the city had more than 100 coffee shops. In 1947, Starbucks opened its first store in Milwaukie - one of the first American cafes outside of Manhattan. Today, Milwaukie's coffee culture is well known throughout Washington and Oregon.

Esperettes are made by grinding beans to a fine powder and then adding hot water to make them into a drinkable form. The first espresso machines were built in the early 18th century, and they used water filters to produce purer coffee than was possible with other methods. In the 1830s, Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a machine that could make two cups at a time, which allowed him to sell his coffee directly to customers. During World War II, J.B. Christie's company produced an unusual kind of coffee called "Tilt-A-Whirl". This coffee was prepared by turning small round tins of ground coffee on their heads so that it moved around quickly and created a whirring sound. It was sold as a novelty item for people who wanted something different from regular café Coffee.
Milwaukie's first gourmet coffee shop opened in the early 1990s. The shop was located on NE Division Street, just north of the historic Everett House. It was open for about a year and served a limited variety of coffee drinks, such as espresso and Turkish coffee. In 1995, Milwaukie residents Jeff and Lisa Kapp founded the Oregon Coffee Review Co., which became one of the most influential review sites for coffee in Oregon. In 2000, they relocated their business to SE Hawthorne Boulevard in downtown Portland. The store closed its doors in 2003 but reopened as Legacy Coffee & Tea Company two years later with a more expansive selection of coffees and pastries. The store continued to serve Gourmet Coffee until it closed definitively in 2007.
Milwaukie is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 43,653 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Oregon and the second-largest city in Multnomah County after Portland. Milwaukie is part of the Salem metropolitan area. The first white people to visit what is now Multnomah County were Missionaries Benton and John Whitman on July 10, 1847. They traveled through what is now Milwaukie on their way from Corvallis to more northerly areas of Oregon. The town was platted on February 4, 1859 by George Noyes and his brother Amos Noyes. A post office called "Milwaukie" was established on October 15, 1859, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 20, 1885.
