The Coast Guard was founded in 1795 when a group of sailors from New York City founded an organization to help protect the Hudson River. In 1924, the Coast Guard moved its headquarters from New York City to Washington D.C., and in 1951 became a national police force. The Coast Guard is also responsible for patrolling more than 12,000 miles of coastline across America and Canada. In 1933, Congress authorized the creation of a coast guard reserve force that could be used in case of war with Spain or Nazi Germany. In 1944, the first special service unit was created as part of the military wing of the Coast Guard Reserve. This unit was known as “The Golden Team” and consisted of elite seamen who were trained in emergency response and sabotage skills. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has made countless donations to various organizations working to improve safety for both users and property along America’s coastline. Some examples include donated boats, helicopters, radar equipment, training kits, supplies and even lives! In 1984, Congress passed legislation authorizing the donation of new coastal patrol vessels called USCG Cutters (UCLASS vessels). These units are designed to provide law enforcement capabilities on America’s coasts while carrying out other duties such as search and rescue missions or incident response activities during disasters or storms. As we continue to experience longer-term trends involving coastal infrastructure damage caused by storm events or natural disasters, it is important that we remember those who have dedicated their lives to keeping our coasts safe – from ancient seafarers like Poseidon who guarded against pirates; through today’s members of our coast guard who work tirelessly every day fighting Terrorism; all the way up through those who will come after us – our children and grandchildren!

Oregon was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1788. The Oregon Territory, created in 1843, included present-day Oregon and parts of Western Nevada and Arizona. In 1846, the Mexican–American War ended with a peace treaty that ceded California to Mexico. President Polk ordered military action against Mexico if it were not resolved peacefully by November 16,1846. On November 16,1846, Mexican forces attacked U.S. troops stationed at Fort Hall in what is now downtown Portland, Oregon. A bloody battle ensued that left more than 50 American soldiers dead; 5 Mexicans also died. Aftermath of the war led to increased immigration from southern California and other parts of the West because of opportunities for land ownership there as well as jobs in agriculture and mining.
