The first settler in what is now Ontario Township wasn't until 1868 when Levi Coffin established himself at Canada Spring with six others who had emigrated from Vermont. By 1870 there were 20 people living in Ontario Township; 10 men and 10 women. The township's first post office opened on October 6th, 1873 with Wm Halsey serving as its first clerk. The land stretched from the Cascade Mountains in the north to central Oregon in the south and east. The purchase placed Oregon on an equal footing with California as a new territory of the United States. The first governor of Oregon was James K. Polk who arrived in January 1849. He was met with hostility by many local people due to Polk's role as a U.S. Senator from Florida and his ownership of large tracts of land in both states. In March 1850, Polk issued a proclamation declaring that all Indian nations within 10 miles of any military post were required to submit to American jurisdiction or be destroyed. This order caused much anger among Native Americans and led to several days of violence acrossprising throughout Oregon Territory including Mount Hood where Native Americans burned down two Ulysses S Grant mills in August 1850 after being promised goods if they submitted peacefully. In September 1850, Congress passed an act granting California statehood which made Oregon Territory part of California rather than remain separate under Ulysses S Grant's rule as planned. In October 1850, Governor Polk issued another proclamation ordering all Indians within 10 miles of any military post to surrender or be destroyed once again; this time there was no response so he ordered troops into town to take care of them instead. This resulted in more violence acrossprising throughout Oregon Territory which continued until December when Congress repealed the order without giving any explanation behind it On February 19th 1853, President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which dissolved all Native American reservations within Arizona and Nevada without giving any notice or compensation to the people affected nor allowing them property rights etc.; this event is commonly known as The Gadsden Purchase
