He named it after his father-in-law's home town in Scotland, Perthshire. Pendleton had a population of about 100 people when it incorporated as a town in 1853. It grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its access to lumber and other businesses. By 1907, Pendleton had become one of Oregon's fastest-growing towns with an estimated population of 3,000 residents. In 1911, the city limits were expanded to include the entire current township and village of Merrillville annexed from neighboring Pittsburg Township; this made Pendleton the second largest city in Clackamas County after Portland. During World War II, Pendleton played an important role as both a munitions plant and military training center for American soldiers stationed in Japan; it also became one of America's largest textile communities during that time period with mills that produced everything from socks to parachutes In 1951, when Clackamas County was created from part of Multnomah County,pendleton became one of its original townships When Multnomah County was split into two again by statehood in 1959,[3] pendletons portion fell within newly formed Columbia City which merged into Columbia State University.[4] After years of discussion among university officials over who should maintain control over pendletons portion which they saw as their most valuable land parcel,[5][6][7] Columbia City voted on November 5th 2008 to annex pendletons portion back intoClackamas County[8]. This merger creates a new municipality with an estimated population 730 residents according to 2008 Census data[9], making it one of Oregon's fastest growing municipalities since 2007 according to UO Researchreports

Pendleton, Oregon is a town located in Tillamook County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,852 at the 2010 census. Pendleton is the smallest county in Oregon and home to the most people of any city in the state. It was founded by Captain George Dallaire and his wife Rachel in 1847 as a small fishing village on the Rogue River. The first post office was established in 1851. In 1882, Pendleton became part of Oregon City and was renamed for Major General Winfield Scott Pendleton (1802-1881), an American soldier who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The town's rich history began with its founding by Captain George Dallaire and his wife Rachel. Dallaire had come down from Canada to help found what would become Pendleton after returning from a trip across the US-Mexico border in 1847. He and his wife set up shop near where he thought there might be potential salmon fishing grounds due to the numerous creeks that crossed into Oregon from Idaho Territory at that time. By 1850, they had started trading goods back and forth between their store and their house on Indian Loop Road until they decided it would be more practical to build their own store on Main Street which they did in 1852. Thanks to this venture, they were able to provide essential goods for local farmers while also gaining some recognition as merchants within their community - something that would eventually lead them to greater success over time thanks to word of mouth travels within their community as well as visits by visiting dignitaries such as Ulysses S Grant and Salmon Pileupi himself! During World War II, Pendleton served as one of four towns hit hardest by Japanese forces during World War II – earning it its nickname "Japtown". Afterward, life returned back to normal with gradual increase of residents until 2000 when new subdivisions were planned adjacent Interstate 5 making access difficult for many residents – quickly becoming known as "The New JapTown". However, recent efforts have seen a resurgence in downtown activity including popular events such as art walks & street fairs throughout summer months despite increased traffic congestion created by I-5 construction projects nearby!
