Since the early 1800s, Portland's military history has been intertwined with the air force. The city's first permanent military installation was Fort Vancouver in 1835, and its strategic location made it a ideal spot for fighter pilots and bombers during World War I. In 1945, Portland became the first city in the United States to deploy an Air National Guard unit when they arrived to help keep tabs on nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll. In recent years,Portland's air force presence has come to be more pronounced. The city is home to two Air Force bases: Turner Field and Ladd-Peebles Airport. As part of Operation Neptune's Spear—the largest U.S. offensive operation in history—Portland played a key role in marshaling forces against North Korea on July 25th, 1950. The following year, Portland hosted NATO Summit meetings which helped solidify American support for European allies during the Cold War era. Today, Portland's air force contingent includes over 1,000 active duty and reserve members who serve throughout Oregon and Washington state as well as Guam and Puerto Rico. In addition to their roles within the local airspace, these officers also provide security for major events such as parades or sporting events across town; monitor traffic signals; or provide cover during operations overseas. With so many people concentrated around one airport – Turner Field – it is no wonder that there have been occasional issues related to noise levels from jets overhead (although this generally decreases as time goes on). Although lengthy deployments are no longer common after new technologies like autonomous vehicles make flying more efficient, Portland remains a hub for USAF activity around the world – whether that means conducting overflights of countries like Germany or Japan or providing training for allied troops stationed abroad
