In Portland, Oregon, the coast guard has been a vital part of the community since 1881. The first Coast Guard Station was established in 1881 in Portland's Financial District and it has continued to be an important part of the community ever since. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station at Falcon Cove was opened and it is still one of the most important stations in Portland. It is also home to one of the city's largest collections of maritime memorabilia. The station is also responsible for providing emergency response services to local communities and Ships in port. In 1992, the Portland Harbor Commission relocated the Coast Guard Station from its original location on Hammonds Island to Pier 21 near NW 11th Avenue and I-5. This move allowed for more modern facilities and made it easier for officers to provide all types of support needed by our residents and businesses alongthe waterfront. In 1916, Congress passed an act that established the Coast Guard gift shop as part of the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Customs and Excise.
