Redmond, Oregon is a town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 23,898 at the 2010 census. Redmond is the principal city of the Redmond–Montebello–Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Redmond were men from northern British Columbia who arrived on horseback in 1885 and named their settlement "Moses Lake." A post office was established there in 1893, and by 1907 it had grown to include a small community of farmers and herders. The name "Redmond" was chosen because of its color: red earth being the predominant deposits found near the town site. In 1912, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen bought land northeast of downtown Redmond for $10 million and laid out his original campus complex consisting of dozens of modest buildings surrounding an expansive open field that would later becomeMicrosoft Park. Microsoft continued to grow at this rate until 1975 when antitrust charges caused its stock prices to plummet; however, Microsoft kept growing even as antitrust cases against other tech companies declined. After years of struggle with government bureaucrats over property values and zoning changes that favored big businesses over small ones, Microsoft finally became a public company under new management in 1994 following a series of acquisitions including RTI Software (later renamed Windows NT) from Acorn Computers Inc., PeopleSoft (later acquired by Symantec), Jazztel (acquired by Sprint), and some smaller businesses. Today's Redmond symbolizes both the success story of technology giant Microsoft during its formative years as well as Seattle's ongoing rivalry with Redmond over which metropolitan area has stronger cultural attractions and larger job opportunities
