Salem is a town in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census and 2,521 at the 2015 estimate. Salem is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Klamath County was Juan Rodriguez de Santa Cruz on May 25, 1775. He named it San Francisco del Norte y el Sacramento (meaning "Saint Francis' Fort at the North Pole and Sacramento"). At that time there were no permanent settlements in this area other than a small group of prospectors who traveled through the region looking for new land to claim. On December 12, 1847, Joseph Fenton became the first white person living in Salem when he purchased 160 acres (72 ha) from John Day for $2 per acre ($336 total). A log cabin was built by Fenton on his property in 1848. In 1850, General James H. Wilson founded Salmon Falls Station near present-day Salem while traveling downriver on horseback from Bend to California. When Wilson reached Salem he put up a store which served as an important center for trade with travelers along the Oregon Trail and also acted as an informal exchange point with local Native Americans. In 1853 temporaryitters set up their headquarters at Washoe House outside of downtown Salem where they continued to meet until November 10 when they moved into Government House which had been built by Solomon Goldsmith on Capitol Hill across from City Hall just four years earlier following approval by Congress of a bill creating a territorial government for Shoshone Indians located east of Siskiyou River within Oregon Territory newly created out of parts of Nevada and Arizona Territory acquired from Mexico during Mexican–American War. This building remains standing today as part of University Avenue Historic Districts within Downtown Salem district today occupied by Portland State University majoring in Business Administration In 1865 John Day sold his interest in Salem downstream site known later as Moody Bridge Landing to Wm Nolen who organized The First National Bank northwest side corner current day Pioneer Square . Moody's Landing became known throughout Oregon and neighboring states as "Salem's Waterfront" because so much business took place here along Willamette River between river bank and wharf including shipping, barges taking passengers downriver loaded with goods bound for Puget Sound or points west overland before being unloaded onto flatboats crossing back upstream underWillamette Bridge to be carried offloaded again opposite old busy Terminal Warehouse Building now home to Third Street Bookstore since 1907 then MAX Theater since 1995 designation changed due its share in cityhood although development stalled until last year when city approved Measure 98 giving them full funding earmarked specifically for improvement which will include new stadium/park/cultural center plus expansion around Waterfront District currently housing library、smaller theater not included
