Salem, Oregon was a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon until 1853 when it became the capital of Oregon Territory. At first, Salem was just a small town with few residents. However, over time, Salem grew and prospered as a major center for coffee cultivation and trade. In 1865, Salem become the capital of the newly created United States of America after its annexation by Oregon. The city continued to grow and prosper through the years until it reached its peak in 1926 when it had a population of over 100,000 people. After that point, Salem slowly declined as businesses moved away from the city and development occurred elsewhere in the area. Today, only a handful of buildings remain standing in downtown Salem which is home to some OFA-licensed coffee shops and restaurants.

The first Europeans to visit Salem were prospectors and Fur traders from Canada in 1825-26 looking for new land to exploit for fur trade. They named their new settlement "Emmys Landing" after two Emmons brothers who had headed west from Missouri on an exploring party in 1824. A post office called Salem was established in 1827, and the town began to grow. The area now comprising of Salem was annexed by the city of Portland on February 17, 1890. In 1851, the town received its charter from the Oregon Territory and became a separate municipality. In 1893, Salem began to grow rapidly due to its location on the newly created Columbia River Crossing and began to compete with neighboring Portland for business opportunities. By 1907, Salem had official status as a city and quickly became one of the most important economic centers on the West Coast. In 1923, Salem merged with nearby Beaverton to form a larger city called Portland.
