Sherwood is a small town in the Siskiyou Mountains of Oregon, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Siskiyou National Forest. The community began as a building boom in 1887 when American prospectors discovered gold and silver in what is now Sherwood. Mining operations ended around 1915, but some ghost towns persist to this day, most notably Green Gables which still stands today. In 1923, Sherwood became one of only two communities in Oregon (the other being SeaTac) that were granted municipal status by then-Governor John A. Burns. Municipal services were provided by a board of trustees known as "The City Council". In 1948 voters approved an annexation referendum for the town of Redding to form a single municipality with Sherwood as its capital. The vote was 2-to-1 and Redding took over all city services including police and fire protection; however, sheriffs continued to be appointed by the governor until 1978 when they were finally abolished effective January 1st following enactment of the State Constitution Revision Act 1975 which granted statewide self-government within each county instead of just within individual counties. When it first appeared on maps there was no place called "Sherwood" but rather three points north on Road 25 where later became part of Brookings
