Airforce Gifts to Springfield, Oregon began in the early 1950’s when the United States Air Force decided that a new airfield in Springfield would be a great place to invest in technology. The USAF purchased land near the current airport and started construction on what is now known as Wright-Patterson AFB. The first hangar was built in 1952 and soon after, the USAF opened its doors to the general public. The history of the Oregon Air National Guard air force gift program began in 1947 when Lt. Col. Floyd S. White decided to establish a military aviation support system for the state of Oregon. The first gift was an F-4E Phantom II jet fighter aircraft from the United States Air Force, which was donated by Major General James Doolittle and Lt. Colonel White. In 1951, another donation was made when Major General Hoyt Sievers presented an F-9C Tiger II jet fighter aircraft to the OANG as part of their program to commemorate Army Aviation Day. In 1973, another donation was made when Colonel William Bendix donated an A-7 Corsair II jet bomber aircraft to the OANG as part of their program in commemoration of Air Force Day. In 1984, another donation was made when Colonel John Kapp donated a C-130H Hercules aircraft to the OANG as part of their program in commemoration of Marine Corps Aviation Day. Today, the Oregon Air National Guard air force gift program continues to be one ofthe most respected andoutstanding programs within our military aviation community worldwide.
