Tigard, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census and has grown to 10,745 since the 2000 census. Tigard is a hub for Portland-area farmers markets and produces many different types of artisan coffee. The first coffee shop in Tigard opened in 1971 as a means to bring together people from all over the Portland area for coffee and conversation. There are now over 100 businesses that sell artisan coffee in Tigard, including some that have been around for century. One of the most well-known brands in Tigard is Peet's Coffee & Tea Company. Peet's began selling their own roasted beans and cold drinks from 1978 until 2007 when they merged with Dutch parent company Keurig Green Mountain LLC. As part of their acquisition, Peet's became an employee-owned cooperative with a workforce that totaled more than 4,000 employees at its peak in 2009. Today, Peet's Coffee & Tea remains one of the largest artisanal roasters in Oregon and continues to be a key player in the community hereabouts. One of Portland's most famous coffeehouses was The Daily Grind, which was open from 1971-1982. In the late 1990s and 2000s, specialty coffee shops began to proliferate in Oregon, with Tigard being one of the first towns to adopt this trend. The Tigard area has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 4,000 years. In 1851, Brigham Young and his Apostles founded the Utah Mission in Tigard. The mission was based in what is now downtown Tigard and served as a cultural center for the area for many years. In 1907, Michael Jordon moved from Salt Lake City to start an agricultural experimental station in central Tigard. This station became one of the largest commercial crops production facilities in Oregon until it closed its doors in 1984 due to high energy prices and changes in technology. In 1915-16, United States Marines named their amphibious assault ship USS "Tigard" after Michael Jordon's station and hometown. In 1957, John Milner opened his first restaurant called "The Lighthouse". He would continue to operate his business until he died on May 6th of that year at age 86 years old after many successful years with his restaurant which had become a local landmark andoquaintance throughout the region

However, some of the earliest examples of coffee production occur in Brazil, where small-scale farmers began brewing coffee in the mid-19th century. In 1829, a French trader named Nicholas-Jacques Conte imported two ounces or 16 milliliters of Brazilian beans, which he flavored with sugar and cinnamon. This event is generally considered to be the first espresso. It wasn’t until 1876 that Italian immigrants brought their own unique style of espresso to America. Known as “grande bottega rosa” or “rosé shop coffee,” these espresso cups were made with high-quality Ethiopian beans and served hot and strong. The popularity of grande bottega rosa led to additional Italian Coffeehouses opening up throughout New York City in the early 1900s. Eventually, these cafes became known as “italian cafés” because they specialized in providing high-quality Italian cuisine within an American context. Throughout the 20th century, artisanal coffees continued to grow in popularity in both Europe and North America. Some of the most famous brands associated with artisanal coffee include Lavazza, Peet's Coffee Company, Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts - all of which continue to produce quality products today.

The city's population was 269,372 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in Oregon. Tigard has a rich history that can be found throughout its neighborhoods and businesses. The first Europeans to visit what is now Tigard were French Father Duplessis and his Jesuit missionaries in 1792. They named the area Puget Sound after Mount Rainier which they had seen on their journey up the coast of North America. Captain George Vancouver explored Puget Sound in 1792 but he did not find any land that could support human habitation and so he abandoned his exploration project. In 1807, James Klamath was hired as an agent by wealthy businessman Robert Hutton to purchase land from native people for development into agriculture. Klamath negotiated with Chief Joseph Tlingit and others to buy 4,000 acres (16 km2) north of present day Tigard for $400 per head of Indian labor because there was no way for white men to
In 1882, the Oregon legislature passed a bill creating Tigard as a city. The first residents of Tigard arrived in 1883. In 1889, the first courthouse and jail were built. The city's firstowment was established in 1912. In 1915, Tigard annexed parts of neighboring Vancleave and Roseburg.
