West Linn is a city in Polk County, Oregon, United States. The population was 20,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The city is located in the Willamette Valley on the east side of the Willamette River and it is bordered by Salem to the south and north, as well as by Eugene to its west and northwest. The first people to live in what is now West Linn were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day downtown. In 1847 John Cushing built a log cabin on what is now Cedar Street in West Linn and named it Cedar City after his father-in-law's family name. A post office called Cedar City was established in 1849, but no town developed until 1861 when George Harmon built a store and hotel on Railroad Avenue NE. In 1865 wagon trains coming from California stopped at Cedar City for supplies; local farmers sold goods to these passengers. The first telephone line was installed in West Linn in 1888; early entrepreneurs marketed phone service through their businesses. In 1907 Wacoal Brothers started a flour mill at present day Millstream Drive NW. West Linn, Oregon is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now West Linn was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around the world in 1778-79. He and his men were exploring the coasts of North America when they sighted what may have been an Indian village near present day Portland. Cook made contact with the Indians and named them "Wetumpka" because they could not understand him. When westward travel began to increase in Northwest India in the late 18th century, traders from London started visiting America and encountered various Native American groups including the Wetumpka people. In 1792, Major George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and became aware of a route to China that seemed impossible for any sailing vessels due to strong currents and weather conditions. After exploring the Columbia River region he decided it would be better to explore inland waterways rather than sail through dangerous seas as had been done before him. Accordingly he sent out two ships-- HMS Discovery (XVIII) and HMS Beagle (AG2)--to explore feasibility of such a route through waters off northwestern Canada. On July 11, 1793 Discovery anchored at Fort Victoria while Beagle sailed southeast along present day Interstate 5 towards The Klondike Gold Rush began! After reachinglatitude 47° N Observatory had determined that there must be another watercourse leading eastward beyond those found by Vancouver which led eventually to Alaska! This led Discovery's captain David Livingstone into error thinking he had reached new land after all! Groundbreaking for high school took place on October 15th 1907 with Mrs Gertrude Hastings serving as first president of West Linn High School District #1A
