The company continued to operate until it merged with another Wilsonville business, The Coffee Shoppe, in 1951. Today, there are several remaining businesses that continue to produce gourmet coffee products under different names (including Gourmande Coffee Company), each specializing exclusively in a certain type of beans or roast style. James Aiken arrived in Oregon in 1843 as part of the wagon train headed southward from Missouri City, Texas. He was determined to find a place where he could raise crops and become self-sufficient. When he discovered the rich soil and natural resources available in central Oregon, he decided to settle there permanently. Sarah Fenton Aiken also came to Oregon during this period of discovery. She was interested in learning about new cultures and wanted to help her husband make his dream come true. With James Aiken's encouragement, she decided to start a small farm on her own property near milepost 5 on Highway 97A (now called US 97). At first glance, it may have appeared that Sarah Fenton Aiken's farm was little more than an insignificant addition to the growing community of Wilsonville; but over time she became an important player in shaping that community's identity and culture! From their small farmstead near milepost 5 on Highway 97A (now called US 97), Sarah Fenton Aikenand her husband developed a strong interest in local agriculture which would later serve as their livelihoods! In addition to raising crops for themselves,SarahFentonAikenandJamesAikenwere also instrumental in starting several local businesses including inns/ taverns/ stores along Highway 97A (now called US 97). These early business partnerships helped createWilsonvilletogetherwithsomeof itslaterknownthenationalattributes:ahubcityforcommerceandtheabilityto supportmultipleculturalfairsper year! Throughout these years, SarahFentonAIKensistedthathercommunitynotjustlivingofftheproduceoftheirfarmsteadbutalsoimprovingitsownqualityofthedevelopmentsofcouncilorsplanningmeetingswasnecessarytoknowmoreabout peoples'needs!
