Baldwin is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Baldwin is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It is the county seat of Butler County and home to the University of Pittsburgh. The first permanent settler in what would become Baldwin was Nicholas Baldwin, who came from Englewood, New Jersey in 1786 and homesteaded on land that now includes parts of current-day Baldwin and Northumberland counties. In 1827, John Fenton made an unsuccessful attempt to purchase land from Nicholas Baldwin for $1 million which would have created the largest tract of undeveloped land in all of Pennsylvania. The resulting panic of 1837 caused many farmers to sell their holdings and return home; this placed a damper on development until about 1840 when wealthy Andrew Mellon donated over 4,000 acres (2 km²) east of present day Northumberland Township for use as a college farm named after his father – then Secretary of Treasury George Washington Mellon – with instructions that it be used for agriculture only. In 1850 Samuel Taylor Coles opened a store at what is now intersectionof State Street/Route 222 and Mount Lebanon Road/State College Boulevard in Northumberland Township on land donated by Mellon; this began one of the longest continuous retail businesses in America within city limits.
