In return for their help, they were given some delicious recipes by local women who lived in nearby farms. John Baldwin is credited with the original concept for what is now Baldwin County,PA. He proposed that the area be divided into two counties - one for agriculture and one for manufacturing. He had come to Pennsylvania in 1760 as part of an army under George Washington's command during the American Revolution. After helping lead raids against British forces in northwestern Pennsylvania, James Baldwins son John settled in what is now Baldwin County in 1763. The early settlers were drawn primarily from southeastern England and Scotland because these areas were rich with natural resources such as coal and iron ore." In 1803, John Crouse opened up his coal mine at Coal Township which remains one of the largest mines today still operating within our boundaries." In 1902, when Erie Railway Company built their line through town it spurred development along First Street which became known as "the Avenue of Opportunity." With many new businesses opening up throughout town including insurance companies (including Allstate), dry goods stores ( Schnucks), grocery stores (Jenny's) & banks (Spartanburg National Bank), downtown business districts sprung up all over town!" This continued growth led to improved transportation options making it easier for residents to get to work or take care of everyday needs withoutêgoing far away from home."
