Bethel Park is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Susquehanna River and is northwest of Reading. The name "Bethel" comes from German settlers' designation for a place where they could build a chapel to worship God. The first Baptist church in Bethel Park was built in 1875 and the present building was dedicated in 1906. In 1956, Bethel Park had its first post office which closed in 1985. Today, most residents are served by two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1926) and Methodist Episcopal Church of America (founded 1865). The Susquehanna River forms the eastern border of Bethel Park and runs through it form bosom to bosom with Slippery Rock and Johnstown to the north-northwest. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,812 people, 536 households, and 406 families residing in the town. The population density was 509 people per square mile (220/km²). There were 603 housing units at an average density of 266 per square mile (115/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White European American; 0% African American; 0% Native American; <0% Asian; <0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Bethel Park was a small town in the United States located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The population of Bethel Park was 1,883 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Bethel Park began as a post office on October 7, 1814, and functioned until it was discontinued on December 15, 1828. It then became a township on February 14th of that year. The first store in Bethel Park opened its doors to business on November 8th 1829. At the time there were just 10 residents in Bethel Park. In 1830 the population had increased to 20 and by 1840 they were 30 with two stores and six families. In 1845 three new stores were built: one by James Laughlin and Charles Browning, another by George Riegle and John McFarlane, and still another by William Calkins. By 1870 there were 12 stores in Bethel Park with a population of 400 residents. The Panic of 1893 destroyed many businesses in Bethel Park including four restaurants which closed their doors for good that day alone. Only five people remain from that day’s population of 600+ when the panic ended six months later – all men working long hours at local mills during those difficult times (see below). On January 5th 1901 the name “Bethel Park” changed from “Lackawanna Township” to “Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Borough” effective January 1st following incorporation into boroughhood according to Act No 34 of 1901 (15 Pa Gen L 349; 2 W3S 2). At this time only 3 residences remained within the boundaries of what is now known as “BethelParkVillage” while 11 structures comprising an aggregate total area annexation date back to pre-incorporation days including taverns such as White Horse Tavern operated by Ebenezer Higgins prior to 1902 when he vested his interest therein with Abram Goldfarb who ran it under new management during 1903–1904 season before selling it again subsequent thereto ~ Andrew McMahon (1896), 1908–1910 (1 state map)
