Bethel Park may have had its beginnings as a small farming community but over time it became one of the most important coffee towns in Pennsylvania because it served as an epicenter for coffee beans production and consumption throughout the state. Coffee beans were first grown on farms near Philadelphia but soon they began to be traded between towns and counties within Pennsylvania. As trade grew more complex, transportation became necessary to move these beans from one destination to another. This required roads and bridges which made shipping commodities like coffee much easier than it had ever been before. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.Bethel Park is located on the east bank of the Allegheny River, about south of downtown Pittsburgh and west of State College. The first European settlers to what is now Bethel Park were Pieter and Neeltje Janszoon van der Sluis who settled in 1758 on a farm near present-day Beaverick Road. The name "Bethlehem" was given to this location by John Milton during his stay in America after leaving England in 1685 as an exile from King James II's court. In 1824, a post office called Bethleen was established at Bethel Park by order of President James K. Polk; it closed in 1826 due to low postal rates. In 1829, a new post office was erected at Bethel Park for Franklin Township which closed also due to low postal rates. In 1830, two brothers named George and Andrew Weir opened a store in what is now the village shop district north of Main Street (now known as Westpark). They became successful traders and built several homes between 1830 and 1840s including one on Glencoe Avenue which still stands today as Handsome Home #711A (). From 1830 until 1860, when statehood came into being, Bethel Park lay within Franklin Township but then it became its own separate municipality with same boundaries as Perry County until 1889 when it merged with neighboring Westmoreland Township to form the present-dayPittsburgh metropolitan area

Bethel Park was founded in 1784 by John Bethel and his wife Susannah. The original settlers were Quakers, but the community became a Presbyterian church in 1802. In 1854, the name of the parish was changed to Bethlehem when it merged with neighboring Immaculate Conception Parish. Bethlehem's rich history began with its founding as a small frontier settlement in what is now Pittsburgh. John Wattis, an entrepreneur who owned several mills near the town, donated land for a college which would become Pennsylvania State University. He also funded a chapel and log schoolhouse which remain standing today. In 1868, Bethlehem became the first municipality in Allegheny County when it was incorporated as a borough. In 1916, Bethlehem annexed nearby Slippery Rock Township and formed anew as an independent city called Bethlehem Township Borough. On December 15th of that year, following the death of Mayor William Fenton (a Democrat), City Council chose James Ahern (an Independent) to succeed him and serve until January 1st 1917 when he too passed away after only two months on office.
